Company A
Robert Henry Frazier
- Private
Robert Henry Frazier was born on March 8, 1842 in Claiborne, TN. to Fleming and Elizabeth (Saunders) Frazier. He was the second oldest child in a family of eight children.

Sometime between 1842-1850, the Fraziers moved to Knox County, Kentucky. They remained there through to the Civil War era.

In his mid teens, Robert went to Estill Springs, Kentucky to enlist in the Eighth Kentucky (Union) Volunteer Infantry. He was a private in companies A & E (consolidated).
On November 5, 1862, Robert deserted for reasons yet unknown (EDITED 2/23/11: I am assuming, through research, that the reason for Robert's desertion would be due to farm work. Preparing the farm for warmer seasons) Through extended research I've found that he wasn't the only soldier to desert. The men listed below also left with him on Novemeber 5, 1862:

Richard Merida
Madison Lewallen
John Cox
John Woolem

There are many others who deserted as well around this time.

Robert returned from his desertion on October 27, 1863 and was restored to duty by competent authority without trial.
All his pay was forfeited for times absent including $10 transportation money by order of General Stanly.
Robert got an honorable discharge when his service was over.

After the war Robert got married to a lady named Sarah Jane Oaks. They had four children. Sarah passed away on November 8, 1884 of unknown reasons (presumably illness of some kind.) His second wife, Delila Padgett Frazier also died before Robert on December 3, 1918 of pneumonia.
On Christmas day, December 25, 1923, Robert passed away in Crab Orchard, Kentucky of Chronic Bronchitis.

Company A
Siler Lambdin
- Corporal
The above name as typed 'Siler' is not in the muster roll of co. A 8 Ky, it is written as 'Salis'. However you find that actually it was Siler Lambdin b.28 jan 1834 whitley county ky d: 14 jul 1910 caldwell ka.who had enlisted, of whom I am a desendant. The proof I have for this is that 'Siler' Lambdin is listed as a civil war pensioner who lost his right arm at the battle Chickamauga in Sep 1863. Second after the regiment was consolidated and companies A and F were combined you will find only a 'Siler' Lambdin.

William Wesley Matlock is my great grandfather. He enlisted in Co. A, 8th Kentucky Infantry, on Sept 2, 1861 in Barboursville, Kentucky in Captain Mayhew's Company, 1st Brigade. He served with the regiment until mustering out at Chattanooga, TN on Nov 17, 1864 (which by then he was in Company E). He fought in all battles the regiment was engaged in with the last battle being Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga. He married three times, had 15 children, and my grandmother, Lucy Matlock, was his youngest. As of 4/03/06 she is still living in Tennessee at age 94. She is one of the very few living daughters of a civil war vet today.

David Houston Hopkins
- Private
My great grandfather is listed in both Co. E and F. He was born in Hancock Co. TN in 1844 and died in 1916. There is some debate whether he resided in Bowie Co. Texas or near Hot Springs AR at the time of his death. He married Elizabeth Parker in either Knox or Clay Co. KY soon after the conclusion of the war and they had 4 sons and a number of daughters. Many of the family moved to Bowie Co. TX in 1900 or 1901. Elizabeth died in 1913 and she and several of her children are buried at Old Salem cemetery in Bowie Co. There is no marker for David Houston and at least one family member says that he remarried and moved near Hot Springs AR.

Isaac was my Great Grandfather. The family stories say that he was shot in the hand at the Battle of Lookout Mountain. He was married twice, his second wife, Rossana Barton, was the mother of my Grandfather Leslie Oaks. The family is from Whitley County.
