Company G
Hampton Hughes - 2nd Corporal
2nd Corporal Hampton 'Ham' Hughes, my GreatGrandfather, was from Cadiz,Trigg County, Kentucky. He,at the age of 18,along with 91 other young men(including his Brother Zem Hughes, 20 years),all mainly from Trigg County gathered at Canton, KY on July 1st, 1861 and marched off in in the direction of Clarksville, TN to Camp Burnett. They called themselves the 'Trigg County Boys'. Over the next two months they trained and become part of the Fourth Kentucky Infantry Regiment,CS, as Company G. He fought in all the Major Campaigns, Battles, Skirmishes, etc that the Fourth was involved in from Shiloh to Stateburg, S.C.; with the 225 surviving members of The Orphan Brigade, surrendering to Capt Lott Abraham, 4th Iowa Calvary, US, at Washington, GA on May 6, 1865, and being released on May 7th to return to his home in Kentucky. As best we know from all the records and 'family' verbal history, he had only one major wound, and that was a ball/bullet in his thigh on July 22, 1865 during the Battle of Intrenchment Creek. He was treated at the 'Atlanta General Hospital', and would not let them operate, as he said at the time, and in later years, 'I'd seem more die from taking the lead out, than those that choose to leave it in, and heal up'. He was right in his case. Since there was about a month or so lull in the fighting at that time, he was able to recover and never really miss any of the real action. He returned to his beloved Trigg County, had a family and a very fulfilled life, living to be 68 years old.
