Company C
John Carey - 1st Sergeant
Remained with the regiment until he was captured along with his brother in 1864 and sent to Andersonville Prison. Wounded multiple times including at 'mortal' wound to the face at the battle of Chickamauga. he obviously recovered from it and returned to duty. The regiment was reorganized as the 4th Ky Mounted Infantry in 64. John survived Andersonville and perished on the Riverboat SULTANA on the way home after the war. The Sultana was carrying prisoners home after the war on the Mississippi when a boiler onboard blew up and engulfed the ship. This remains the greatest maritime disaster in Americas History. John was listed as alive but reports show a year later that he was finally listed as dead. The VFW in Moorehead KY. is named in his honor.
