Company D
Samuel J. Stewart
- Private
Samuel enlisted in September of 1862. He was a private in Company D of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry CSA.
Samuel was a Morgan's Man - riding under the command of General John Hunt Morgan. Samuel was twice captured - once in Tennesse, in 1863. He was paroled, and rejoined his unit. The next time, he wasn't so lucky. He was captured during Morgan's great raid, the summer of 1863, and spent the remainder of the war in Camp Douglas, the prisoner-of-war camp in Chicago. He was received in Camp Douglas on August 22, 1863, and released on March 16, 1865. Samuel was not alone up there. Remember Richard Guthrie, his uncle? Richard Guthrie's (Samuel's Uncle) son William was also in Camp Douglas. William wasn't so fortunate, however. He died. Samuel's future brother-in-law, A.P. Walden, was also in Camp Douglas. AP and Mary married in 1867. Richard Guthrie was bondsman for the marriage.
Samuel was described in his military papers as 5'9' tall, with dark complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes.
