The 4th Iowa Cavalry Regiment was organized at Camp Harlan, Mount Pleasant on September to November. A, E, and F Companies were organized on November 23, 1861. The rest of the regiment was formed on November 24-27, 1961.
They became part of the 2nd Division, Army of Southwest Missouri, Department of Missouri until July 1862.
They were transferred to the District of Eastern Arkansas, Department of Missouri until December 1862.
After this duty they became the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, District of Eastern Arkansas, Department of Tennessee until May 1863.
They were then transferred to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, 13th Corps., Department of Tennessee until May 1863.
They became unattached, 15th Corps., Army of Tennessee to August 1863.
After this period of time they were part of Winslow's Cavalry Brigade, 17th Corps. to May 1864.
They then returned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, 16th Corps.
After this duty they were transferred to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, District of West Tennessee until November 1864.
They then became part of the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, Winslow's Cavalry Corp., Military Division Mississippi to December 1864.
After this duty they went to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, District of West Tenessee until February 1865.
Their last assigned unit was the Department of Georgia where they served until August 1865.
