Company E
George Whitestine
- Private
George Whitestine was a private in Company E., 75th Indiana Infantry. His description upon entering was: light complexion, brown eyes, light hair, 5 ft. tall. -- Died July 21, 1863 at camp near Elk River, Franklin County, Tennessee, George Whitestine, Private in Company E, 75th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. The unfortunate and untimely death of the deceased produced the deepest feeling of regret, and made in indelible impression upon the minds of his fellow soldiers. George was an excellent boy, a brave soldier and in every respect beloved by all of his associates for his strict integrity, the untiring zeal and devotion he manifested in behalf of his country and the noble and glorious cause in which he was engaged. We deeply feel his loss. He is no longer with us to help us battle the enemies of our country. But we must submit ourselves to the dispensation of providence, and trust that he rests in peace in the land where wars are at an end. (A. H. Shaffer, Asst. Surg., 75th Regiment Indiana Volunteers)

Company I
Henry J Cline
- Private
Henry was my great-great-grandfather. He enlisted when his regiment was recruited in July, 1862, and served until July, 1865, after the war was over. He wrote a series of 22 letters to his wife, Lovina, while he was in service, and I have those original letters, as well as a transcribed version.

He probably had no better than a third grade education, although his penmanship was impeccable. He spelled many words phonetically, or incorrectly. Lovina could not read or write, and had to have the letters read to her by a neighbor. Probably for this reason, Henry's letters had little romantic or intimate language. Mostly they were notes to home, letting her know he was OK, and sometimes instructing her which bills to pay and what to send him.

Henry was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga, but did not mention this in his letters. He probably wanted to avoid worrying his wife. Many long, forced marches by foot, in harsh weather, took a physical toll on him (and many other soldiers), and after the war he applied for and received a disability pension. In his application for the pension, he described the wound -- a flesh wound from a bullet in his left thigh. He removed himself from the battlefield, sat down beside a stream, excised the bullet with his pocket knife, and applied a poultice using his handkerchief.

After the war, he returned to Boxley Town (near Noblesville) and worked as a carpenter in a sawmill, until his disability made it impossible. He died young, at age 53.

Andrew J. Harter
- Private
Enlisted by J.N. Reynolds in Bluffton on 25 July, 1862 for "three years service" with the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was mustered in that same day in Indianapolis by Colonel Carrin at the age of 20 years. He was a member of Company K, 75th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Andrew served well but fell, shot dead, during the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863. His fate was mentioned by another member of his unit in "I Soldiered for the Union, The Civil War Diary of William Bluffton Miller, Company K, 75th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, 14th Corps".

It reads on the date listed as Saturday, 19 September, 1863. Mispellings have been left unaltered.

"We haulted near crawfish Springs for breakfast and I wrote up my diary for yesterday. The mail came up and I got some letters from Nett and others. While laying in the road the firing commenced in fron and we fell into line and pushed forward. We moved perhaps two miles and filed off to the left of the road and layed down while the battle raged in our front. We are now in reserve and are to support or reinforce any part of the line that may give way. We were in this position for some time and then went off by the right flank and took a circle and haulted at the road and facing East. About eleven o'clock a.m. the 1st Kentucky Infantry was pressed so hard they gave way and left a part of battery "F" 4th Ohio Artillery exposed to capture. The Rebels charged and came for the Artillery. Our command was "Fix Bayonets" and the race was on for the guns one of which was fast on a sapling and nearly all the horses were dead and only a few of the men left with their Lieutenant. We got to the Battery first and broke files around them and met the enemy "face to face". They haulted and we opened fire and they began to waiver and finally broke, butour regiment had received a volley from them that left its impression on our ranks, but we followed them up for some distance before they reformed. Then we fought them back and forth over the field or through the woods rather during the day. The rattle of musketry was dreadful and to see the men lying dead and dying on the field and being run over by Artillery and lines of men it was perfectly appalling. The first man killed in my company was ANDREW J. HARTER and he was killed about the time we reached the guns or soon after we crossed the road. There any many incidents of interest on the field that came under my immediate notice . . .

Company K
John Calvin Milliken
- Private
"JOHN C. MILLIKEN - one who fought in the late war, enlisted at Ossian, in the year 1862, joining Company K, 75th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving three years under Captain S.R. Karns. He was a participant in the battles of Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Ringgold, Dalton, Burnt Hickory, Kenesaw Mountain, Jonesborough, Atlanta, Savannah and Bentonville, including numerous skirmishes; was mustered out of service at the close of the war. He was born in Mahoning county, Ohio, September 20, 1841; married May 14, 1868, in Wells county, Indiana, and died March 14, 1875, the cause being disease contracted while in the service. His wife, Elizabeth, is a descendant of John W. and Lettice (Gorrel) Foughty, who, in 1852, settled in Wells county. Her children are: Mary Gee, born September13, 1869, and Martha Jane, August 21, 1874. Address Mrs. Milliken at Ossian." {PERSONAL HISTORIES, Historical Hand-Atlas, History of Wells County, 1881; page 196}

As did his brothers, John enlisted in the service of the Union on July 30th, 1862 at Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana by J.N. Reynolds for 3 years service. He mustered in on August 19th by Colonel Carrington at Indianapolis, and served with 75th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company K during the War Between the States. He was 20 years of age.

His service record appears fairly nondescript on the surface with only an annotation of being in the skirmish at Hoover's Gap in June 1863 and the Battle of Chattanooga on September 19-20, 1863. He was also listed as being "absent with train to Stephenson, Alabama" in September-October 1863. He mustered out near Washington, DC on 8 June 1865. His Honorable Discharge is on file in the Wells County Courthouse in Bluffton.

He was wounded 3 times in the line of duty and mustered out at the end of the War. He died on June 9, 1914.
