Company H
Frederick Burkele - Corporal
Frderick enlisted as a Private on September 6, 1961 in the 32nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company H. He saw action in Kentucky and Shiloh, Tennessee where he was wounded near the Bloody Pond and lay helpless for several days. He was captured and pleaded with Conferderate surgeons not to removed his wounded leg. He was then freed by Union forces and discharged on July 28, 1862 with the rank of Corporal.

He died at home about 6 months after his discharge from his wound(s).

There was confusion as to the spelling of his last name. He enlisted under Burkele, then it was changed to Burkle. He also spelled it Burkley. This caused problems for his widow who was unable to obtain his Veteran pension because of the confusion and because of his dying after discharge.
