Letter written on 2-19, 1862 by Samuel Summerville describing the death of his and wife Jane's son 'Josiah' as well as ten other members of the Terre Haute regiment whose names he did not supply. In this letter Samuel notes that Josiah, who was born about 1840 and most of the young men of Terre Haute had joined the army and that life had become extremely difficult and that it had grown very dull without them there. He notes that he had recently sold a yearling oxen for $48 and the prices of bushel rations of wheat-60 cents, corn-15-18
cents, oats-8-10 cents, potatoes-10 cents, cows could be bought for $11 and that both sheep and horses were very expensive.
The 10th Indiana Infantry was reorganized at Indianapolis and mustered in for three years service on September 18, 1861.
The regiment was attached to Thomas' Command, Army of the Ohio, October-November 1861. 2nd Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to December 1861. 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, Army of the Ohio, to September 1862. 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps, Army of the Ohio, to November 1862. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Center, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to January 1863. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October 1863. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, XIV Corps, to December 1863. Garrison duty, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Department of the Cumberland, to April 1864. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, XIV Corps, to September 1864.
The 10th Indiana Infantry mustered out of service on September 19, 1864. Veterans and recruits were transferred to the 58th Indiana Infantry.

Zephaniah was a resident of Montgomery County; enlisted in the 3 year regiment,Company B (Crawfordsville Guard). He was present at the battle of Mill Springs, was wounded in the left wrist. He was also present at the battle of Perryville, KY., loosing an eye during the 10th's charge up Peters Hill. Buried at Mace K of P Cemetery, Mace, Indiana.

Joseph Henry Evans - Private
5th Great Uncle - Private, Company D, 10th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Born on August 4, 1837, in Maryland. Enlisted and Mustered In on September 18, 1861, at the age of 24. The regiment fought at the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky on January 19, 1862, and participated in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi in May and April. It fought at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky in October, and participated in the Tullahoma Campaign later that year. The regiment was engaged at the Battle of Chickamauga, in the Siege of Chattanooga, and at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in 1863. The next year it participated in the Atlanta Campaign, fighting at Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, in the Siege of Atlanta and at Jonesboro, Georgia. Mustered out with regiment on September 19, 1864. Died on January 22, 1924, in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

IN Volunteers and was discharged 13 June 1862 because of a gunshot wound. Date of death is unknown, but he is buried in Wyandotte Cemetery, Tippecanoe Co., IN.
