He enlisted 11 May 1861 in Indianapolis in the infantry. He fought at Harper Valley, W.VA, and Sharpsburg, VA. Regiment disbanded in May 1862. He then enlisted in the 8th Regiment of the Indiana Cav., and was assigned to E Co. He was involved in many battles including the 'The Battle for Atlanta','The March to the Sea',and the 'Carolina' campaigns. He mustered out July 20, 1865.
