Benjamin Jones - Sergeant
Ben Jones enlisted as a corporal in Co A, 47th Indiana Volunteers on September 25, 1861 at Anderson, In and mustered into the service on November 2nd, 1861 in Indianapolis. He was promoted to sergeant on October 30, 1862 and wounded during the siege of Vicksburg on June 18th, 1863. Served in all the campaigns and battles of the 47th. Mustered out at Baton Rouge, La on Oct 23, 1865.
Following his discharge, he married Mary Daily on December 24th, 1865 and began farming in Willshire Township, Van Wert County, Ohio. They had 13 children, 12 of whom lived to adulthood. He died on January 27th in 1903 at the age of 66.

My great-grandfather. Enlisted October 10, 1861 at Huntington, Indiana. Enrolled for duty on October 11, 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. Mustered in service at Indianapolis on December 3, 1861 as a corporal, Company F, 47th Regiment, Indiana Infantry (originally Captain Shearer's Company). Description: Age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., dark complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, born in Fairfield County, Ohio. Promoted to Sergeant on May 17, 1863. Discharged to re-enlist as a veteran volunteer--mustered out on December 15, 1863--re-enlisted on December 16, 1863 at New Iberia. Louisiana--mustered in on January 1, 1864 as a Sergeant in Algiers, Louisiana. Promoted from 1st Sergeant to 1st Lieutenant, same company, on April 9, 1865 (Governor's commission dated February 1, 1865.) Mustered out of service on October 23, 1865 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Jacob E Waymire - Corporal
My 4th Great Grandfather, Jacob mustered in to Co. G, 47th Indiana on Dec. 9, 1861 as a Corporal. He was killed at Riddles Point, Missouri on March 22, 1862 in the battle of Island #10. An artillery shell thrown by a Confederate Gunboat on the Mississippi River landed about a mile from the river in a farmer's yard. Jacob was attempting to disarm the shell, aided by the farmer, by removing the powder with a file handle. The shell exploded killing Jacob, the farmer and the farmers two children who were nearby. The incident was later reported in an article in the New York Times.
