Company A
Godwin Scudamore - Captain
Born November 28, 1824 in Herfordshire, England. He was enlisted July 28, 1862 as a second Lieutenant and was in Co. A of the 80th Regt. IL Vol. Infy. He was ordered to Kentucky and was part of the Tenth Division of the Thirty third Brigade and served in battle at Perryville. In January 1863 they were assigned to the Fourteenth Army Corp. On May 3rd 1863 they surrendered to a superior force and were taken to Rome, then to Atlanta and then the officers were sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia arriving May 16th. There have been many things written about the escape of over 100 from Libby Prison when the prisoners dug a tunnel under the street. The prisoners worked after 9 pm each night with 2 or 3 to watch - it took them 7 weeks to dig the tunnel with clam shells and case knives. 200 had planned to go but only 109 got out as they were discovered. 55 of them were recaptured but Godwin was one who made his way back to the Union Lines. His own story tells of his escape on Feb 9 1864 and his suffering and struggles before he arrived at the Union line at Mitchell's Station on February 28th. After a leave of absence he returned to his command 10 April 1864 and was with General Sherman's army on its 'march to the Sea'. He rose from first lieutenant to captain and commanded two companies before his discharge 10 June 1865 at Camp Harker, Tennessee. Died May 22, 1908 Scotts Valley, CA. Buried Hartley Cemetery, Lake County, CA

Company I
James Duncan - Private
Great-Great-Great-Uncle. Enlisted 01 August, 1862. Wounded 08 October, 1862 in the Battle of Perryville. The wound was non-life threatening but he contracted measles while in the hospital and died 08 Nov., 1862 at the hospital in Louisville, KY. Wrote MANY letters home which have been printed in a family history. Made mention of receiving a Springfield rifle during training then wrote about receiving 'new' rifles. The 80th Illinois was one of the units to be equipped with Henry repeating rifles, I assume that is what he is referring to.
