3d US Dragoons Mexican War. First (Orderly) Sergeant of Co. D from enlistment to Arkansas Campaign. Mentioned and pictured in Stillwell's book 'Story of a Common Soldier'. Resigned Feb. 1865. Died in Texas.

Robert E. (Elkin) Haggard - Captain
Captain R. E. Elkin was wounded on the first day of the Battle at Shiloh (Pittsburgh Landing), April 6, 1862, then captured and sent to Libby Prison with Federal Generals Prentiss and Crittenden and 213 other officers from Shiloh. There are papers in his records of his promotion to Major, but he had been captured before he received that promotion. He was exchanged, returned to his unit, but then was mustered out because of the severity of his injuries. He never regained the use of his arm.

William G Farrar - Corporal
William, b. 2 July 1845, Jefferson Co., IN, was the son of William T. Farrar and Martha J. Sever. On 10 Dec 1861, William enlisted for Civil War service at Carrollton, Lawrence Co., Illinois. The 24th of January 1864, William enlisted for a second tour of duty and became a Corporal. He was described as having grey eyes, dark hair, dark complexion and being 5 feet 5 inches in height. The 15th of December 1864 William was captured at Murfreesboro guarding a train depot. He was shot in the leg and taken to Andersonville Prison. The 28th of June 1865, William was discharged from service under a telegram from the War Department dated May 12, 1865 and was 'entitled to 3 months extra pay per telegram from War Department'. He was in several battles including the Battle of Vicksburg. His name is engraved on a bronze plaque at the Illinois Memorial located on the Vicksburg Battlefield. William died in 1884 at the age of 38.

Charles E Witting - Sergeant
My G-G-G Grand Uncle Charles(Carl) E. Witting went on leave from the military in Sweden and shortly after his arrival to America he joined Illinois 61st Infantry, Company I. He was in residence at Benton Barracks on March 7, 1862. Was in the Battle of Shiloh, not sure if he was wounded but he died May 15,1862 of pneumonia. (he made Serg't)
