He is buried at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina, Section 7, site 512. Little is known about Tilman Dixon's ancestry.

Mattoon joined at the same time as William. William recieved a disability discharge on 05 Nov. 1862. He later went to school and became a Lawyer.

Enlistment certificate called him a 'native of Illinois' (although Rhoda Jackson said he was raised in Tennessee). Muster in Roll was taken 17FEB, 1862, in Jonesboro, Illinois.

As a 1 LT he tendered his resignation on September 27, 1862, at Ft. Walleck, Kentucky, due to poor health. The unit surgeon confirmed this. He mentioned being paid last in Tuscumbia, Alabama on July 1, 1862 by a Major Lowery. His Regiment Commander was Col S.C. Foles.
Mustered out: Reassigned at Corinth, Mississippi, September 1, 1862. Muster-out Roll March 14, 1865, Fayetville, NC.
