Company F
George B. Phifer - Private
George B. Phifer was my great-great-grandfather. He was 40 years old in 1864 when he was drafted. He was 5''7'', had black hair, blue eyes, and a dark complexion. He mustered into Co. F 32 IL Infantry on October 18 in Olney, IL. By November, he was in hospital in Nashville with pneumonia and was not released until May 25,1865. It appears that he never pulled a trigger. He was promoted to corporal on June 6, 1865 (I am not sure why, since he seemed to have missed the action altogether) and after marching to several midwest forts was mustered out of service in September 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

A minor mystery....
John J. (or Jacob J.) Phifer was mustered into the same co., same regiment on the same day as George B. John (or Jacob) was listed as a substitute. He was the same height and had the same coloring. Was he perhaps a brother or cousin?

John (or Jacob) joined the 32 IL in Savannah in December 1864, assigned to Sherman''s Army. Although he missed the March to the Sea, he was present during the campaign through the Carolinas, Johnston''s surrender, and quite probably the Grand Review. In June 1865 he and a number of others were listed as deserters (He must have said something to the effect that ''the war is over, so I am out of here!'') He and his fellows later sued for back pay. The final decision was that he would not be classed as a deserter, but he would not get paid.

I would be interested in contacting anyone whose ancestors were in this unit in hopes of discovering further information.
