R. from Perryville to Baltimore, until August, 1863. Attached to District of Delaware, 8th Army Corps, Middle Dept., to July, 1863. 2nd Separate Brigade, 8th Army Corps, Middle Dept., to August. Mustered out August 12, 1863.
Regiment lost 3 by disease during service.

My GGF Joseph Simpson, Pvt., age 21 joined the 5th Delaware Vol. Inf. Co. B, served as garrison guard at Fort Delaware and guard duty on Phila., Wilm., and Balt. R/R. The remainder of this unit was ordered to Perryville, MD to relieve a NY Regiment. After Joseph's service for Delaware was completed he joined the 34th NY Light Artillery until the end of the Civil War.

William P Rhein - Corporal |
Mustered in 30 October 1862 as a Private, Rhein joined the 5th Delaware Infantry Volunteer. The Fifth Delaware Infantry...was organized for only nine months service. The regiment mustered in 37 officers and 878 men during October and November of 1862. They were all mustered out in August, 1863. Their contributions included guarding railroad bridges in Maryland along with guard duty in Delaware at certain critical industries and served on Pea Patch Island as prison guards for the steadily growing number of Confederate prisoners being held at Fort Delaware. Rhein was promoted to Corporal during his nine months service and mustered out on 6 August 1863.
