Company D
Andrew Jackson Phillips - Sergeant
Andrew J. Phillips (my g-g-g-grandfather) resided in Waterford and was 28 years old when the war began. He enlisted as a private on 1/8/62 and was subsequently promoted to Corporal on 3/17/62. Promoted again to Sgt. On 4/1/62. He was captured at Brashear City, LA on 6/23/63 (along with seven other members of his regiment) and paroled on 6/29/63. Re-enlisted 1/22/64. ''AJ'' was wounded at Cedar Creek on 10/19/64 (family lore has it he was hidden by a woman in her house until the confederates were swept out of the area) and he was discharged on 11/28/64. Some of the battles his unit were in included Port Hudson, Winchester, Fisher Hill and Cedar Creek (as part of Sheridan''s Army of the Shenandoah). If you have or are looking for specific information on the 12th's history, you can email me directly. Regards, Scott B.
