Served at Forts Bragg, Humboldt, Gaston and the Presidio of San Francisco during the Civil War. His company went out on Indian scouting patrols through Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, California between 1863-1864. They were in search of 'hostile' Wailaki and Yuki Indian villages. He was discharged from the army in 1866 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California.
