William was my 2nd Great Grandfather. He was born in Alabama and moved to Arkansas. He was from Shepherd Springs, named after his family. He fought with his cousin Capt. James C Wright. The first battle was in Prairie Grove, Ark. He was wounded later in the war. He drew a military pension of $100.00 a year. He lived to be around 92 years old, dying in 1923.

Andrew M. Vaught, 4th Corporal, Company E, Brook's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry,* enlisted June 17, 1862 in Crawford County by J. C. Wright for 3 years, taken prisoner December 30, 1862** Frog [sp?] Bayou, Washington County, Arkansas, recorded as 4th Sergeant April, 1863, appointed Ensign November 1, 1864 to take rank October 25, 1864.
Col. I have the honor to recommend for appointment to the office of "Ensign" of Brooks' Regt.__Hawthorne's Brigade, Fagen's Division, Arkansas infantry, Andrew Marion Vaught. He is twenty one years of age, was born in ???, is now a citizen of the State of Arkansas. This office created by Act of Congress app. in Feby, 1864 has never been filled in this Regt.
The man recommended has been bearing the flag as Color Sergt since 30th of April last. He is a Sergeant in Company "E" of the Regiment.
This promotion is richly deserved. Sergt. Vaught nobly won a reputation for bravery on the bloody field of "Jenkin's Ferry." He gallantly bore the flag in the close of that fight after three others had fallen with it.
