He is shown as killed, wounded, or missing in the Little Rock True Democrat on May 27, 1863. He appears on a roll of prisoners of war received at Military prison, Alton, Illinois: Received on May 18, 1863, captured at Port Gibson, Mississippi on May 1, 1863. He appears on a roll of prisoners of war captured by the army of Tennessee, and sent to Memphis, Tennessee on May 25, 1863 at Big Black.

He applied for and received and Arkansas State Confederate Pension on July 2, 1907.

STYLES, F.M. Cpl - Enl 20 Jul 1861 at Arkadelphia, AR. Captured 8 Apr 1862 at Island #10 and sent to MP at Camp Douglas, IL 12 Aug 1862 then to Vicksburg, MS and exchanged 23 Sep 1862. Captured 9 Jul 1863 and paroled 12-13 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. Took oath 2 May 1864 at Pine Bluff, AR. Ht 5' 7', eyes blue, hair lt, complx lt, residence: Tulip, AR. --------------------------------
The 12th Regt was organized 27 Jul 1861 and surrendered at Island #10 on 7 Apr 1862. Men who were not captured served with the 3rd and 6th regiments until the 12th regiment was reorganized. Exchanged in late 1862. Reorganized at Jackson, MS 2 Oct 1862. Surrendered at Port Hudson, LA 8 Jul 1863. Paroled later that month. Consolidated with other units and designated as the 2nd Inf Regt Consolidated, Trans-Mississippi Dept 11 Jan 1864.
NOTE: Island #10 was a fortified island in the Mississippi River at New Madrid, MO.

Notes from T. G. Bratton, September 15, 1975:
In the military records at Little Rock, I found F. J. Anderson, Co. F, 12th Ark. Inf., enlisted July 26, 1861, at Arkadelphia. There were remarks that I could not read. On another card: Claim for deceased soldier, filed by Mary Anderson, widow. Died March 12, 1863 at Arkadelphia. Reported June 1, 1863; returned June 2, 1863. Amount found due, $51.03. Office of Confederate States Auditor for War Dept.

Grandpa (F. J. Anderson) died at or near Madison Missouri (at Camp) in 1861, but I don't know the exact date.
P. S. Just found it. F. J. Anderson died on December 29, 1861.

James Madison Garner - Private
James was born 2 May 1839 in Double Springs, Cherokee Co. Alabama. He died 28 July 1912 in Fordyce, Dallas Co. Ark. He was the Father in law to my 4th cousin 3 x removed Alice Ann Crouse. He and wife are buried in the Tolson Cem. in Cleveland Co. Ark. He enlisted at about age 23 as a Pvt in Co I 12th Regiment Ark. Infantry. The 12th served in the Western Dept. of Mississippi and East Louisiana. Towards the end of the war they became part of the 2nd Arkansas consolidated Infantry. In the confusion and defeat at Island # 10 and again at Port Hudson many men were enlisted in the 33rd Ark. Infantry. On the Camden Expedition they served as Mounted Infantry. Battles: Island # 10, Siege of Port Hudson, Mount Elba, Prairie D'Ane, Marks Mill, Jenkins Ferry. Surrendered as 2nd Ark. Consolidate Infantry 26 May 1865. Most of the men did not and just went home. God rest his soul.
