Ervin Peter Kilfoyle Berry - Private
From my dads research he was in Co. C. Also from his notes he was wounded in the head at the battle of Port Hudson and lost the end of a finger. A silver plate was emplaced due to head injury. From a 1921 census of Conf. Soldiers shows he was discharged in June '63. and drawing a pension #16217. My research finds he enlisted on 2 Jan 62 in Guntersville. Was in Co. 'E' when captured on 9 Jul 63 at Port Hudson, La. Appeared on a roll of POW's paroled at Port Hudson dated 12,13 Jul 63 and 15 Jul 63. Appeared on a list of 'sick and wounded (paroled) to be sent to their homes via New Orleans and Mobile' dated 31 Jul 63, HQ Port Hudson. Then strangely appears on a 'receipt roll' for clothing, for 2nd qr, 1864. Date of issue 30 May 64. Ervin lived 89 years and died on 15 May 24 in Red Hill, Al where he ran a blacksmith shop and built wagons.

Francis M Thaxton - Private
Pvt. Thaxton hailed from Guntersville, Marshall County, Alabama. He enlisted on January 13th, 1862 at Camp Johnson near Nashville, TN. He was married to Mary Cryar and they had one child, a daughter named Alice.

Pvt. Thaxton's wife was notified of his death via a letter dated January 10th, 1863 titled 'General Hospital-Governor's Mansion', Jackson, MS. He was 24 years old. This information is detailed in a letter from Dr. R.N. Anderson dated June 11th, 1863 confirming his death to his family back in Alabama.

In April, 2010 the family of Pvt. Thaxton gathered at Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson, Mississippi to place a grave marker that was long overdue.

More information about Pvt. Thaxton is on File with the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Information on his grave-site is available at www.findagrave.com. His descendants are still in possession of several letters he sent home during his service.

John Stewart - Private
John joined at New Hope/Vienna in Southern Madison Co., along with his brother David and cousin Chapman. There was also a Daniel Stewart, but I have not learned of his connection as of yet. He was paroled at Port Hudson and when released the men had to walk home. It is said that he was in such bad health when he arrived home to Clouds Cove, that it was years before he regained his health.
