William H Gist was born 1-16-1843 in Marion County, AL. He enlisted in the Union army at Corinth, MS in 1861. He was honorably discharged after a year in service due to accident with his horse that kept him permanently disabled. He lived in the Franklin County area until late 1800's and moved to Lauderdale County and died there 4/28/1914.

My g-g-grandfather was born 12/5/1831 in Fayette County. Enlisted 7/24/1862 in Huntsville. Appointed Sgt. 11/1/63.

Joseph B. Pace Enlisted August 28, 1863 at Larkinsville, Alabama 1st Calvary Regiment Alabama & Tennessee Independent Vidette Co. A Participated in skirmish at Hunt's Mills and skirmish at Sand Mountain, Alabama.

Stoax Shundy Spain son of Samuel and Rebecca Spain (b) 23 Aug 1836 in Tishomingo County, MS married Eliza Hopper on the 16th Sept 1855, in Marion County, AL., died her Mooreville, AL 28 July 1865.

From Compiled Service Records and Pension Records:

October 1863, enlisted at Glendale, Mississippi into the Union Army, 1st Alabama Calvary, Company H. By Nov 23, 1863 he had been listed as absent without leave. In Dec 1863 he is shown Recruiting in Alabama. It seems as though there was some confusion as to where Storax was during a given period of time. For this reason George W. Emerick, 1st Lt. of 1st Alabama Calvary, Company H writes a letter to to explain his absence. The letter is as follows:

Huntsville, Ala June 24, 1865

Capt.
I have the honor to make the following statements in regard to Private Storex S. Spain Co. H 1st Ala Cav. Vols who has been erroneously reported as a deserter.
On the 15th of Apr 1864 Major Tramel myself and twenty five (25) Enlisted men were detailed to recruiting service in Alabama. Private S.S. Spain was one of that number.
When we returned Spain was sick and we were compelled to leave him in the country.
Again on the 25th of June 1864 I was sent into the same country. Spain was still unable to come in with me. On the 5th of August 1864 I was again detailed as Recruiting Officer for the Regt and sent to the same part of the country. This time I found Spain well; and when I returned to our lines on the 18th of Sept 1864. Spain came with me. Col. Doolittle then Comd'g Post at Decatur, Ala learning of his extended knowledge of the country requested me to allow him to use Spain as a scout to which Spain objected, but said if he could there be of the most service to his country it was all right.
He was accordingly detailed and sent into the country. The following afternoon we were attacked by Hoods Rebel Army. Spain made his escape to the mountains, where being compelled to remain for a time, he at the head of the twenty five mounted union made himself the terror of the Rebel Cav.
At one time charged into Jasper the county town of Walker drove seventy five rebel Cav form the place capturing nearly all their horses and arms and released the union prisoners confined there. When the Federal Forces again occupied Decatur Ala. he returned to that Post. On the 10th day of March 1864 since wihich time he has performed well and faithfully the duties of a soldier. He was dropped from the Rolls as a deserter in October 1864 by Capt Ford Comd'g his Co. who did not know as well as the cause of his continued absence.
In consideration of the above facts I would respectfully recommend that he be restored to duty without loss of pay or a allowance which would be but justice to a good soldier and a true gentlemen.
I can certify to all that I have stated above and will further say that instead of being called a deserter with the lose of pay and his good name he should be rewarded, as he deserves for his great work fo the Union.

My G-Great Grandma Campbell's first cousin,my fifth.

David R. Snelling was forced to enlist as a private in Company H, Fifty-seventh Georgia Volunteer Infantry in May, 1862, enlisted by his cousin Lieutenant Richard Bonnner. He deserted in August, 1862, crossing the river separating the Union and Confederate forces. He joined the Union Army, enlisting in the 5th Cavalry Regiment, Tennessee(First Middle Tennessee Cavalry) and being commissioned as a 1st Lt. in Company D, on
7 Nov 1862. Company D served in the Corinth, Miss district until June, 1863. In April, 1863 Company D joined Colonel Abel Straight on his disastrous mule raid into North Alabama. Captured by N.B.Forrest, Company D was shipped to Libby Prison in Virginia where they were exchanged for confederate prisoners held by the Union. As it turned out, Lieutenant Snelling was one of the last officers exchanged since the exchange policy was terminated as of June, 1863. Company D, 5th Cavalry Regiment Tennessee was transferred into Company I,
1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment(US) on 15 Jul 1863. The 1st Alabama operated in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi,
Kentucky and Arkansas until the push into Georgia in early 1864. After the capture of Atlanta, a detachment of 1st Alabama Cavalry was assigned as General Sherman's escort, providing courier service to the four Corps and 'Kill Cavalry' Kilpatrick Cavalry Division during the Georgia and Carolina campaigns.

IV... 1st Lieutenant D. Snelling, Company 'I,' 1st Alabama Cavalry, commanding detachment of that regiment, on duty at these Headquarters as couriers, is, with the detachment, relieved, and will join his command without delay. Lieutenant Snelling having reported this detachment to the commanding officer of their regiment, will avail himself of a leave of absence of thirty (30) days, at the expiration of which he will rejoin his regiment, wherever it may be.
In relieving this detachment, the General-in-Chief desires to thank Lieutenant Snelling, and the men under his charge, for the faithful manner in which they have ever performed any duty called for. The promptness with which all dispatches have been delivered by them, during two long campaigns, is due to their zeal, fidelity and intelligence.
Mustered Out Company I, 1st Cavalry Regiment Alabama on 20 Oct 1865.

Leroy was the second son of Samuel David McCulloch and the younger brother to Thomas David McCulloch

Leroy enlisted 7-31-1862 in Huntsville as a volunteer Union soldier. Mustered in 8-12-1862, and assigned to Captain Smith's Company 1st Reg. AL Volunteers => Company K, 1st Reg. AL Cavalry (new).

According to Leroy's file 'Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama,' when he enlisted he was 6 feet and 2 inches tall, of light complexion, with hazel eyes and black hair.

He died of measles in Hospital No 14, in Nashville TN on 11-22-1862.

He was buried in Nashville National Cemetery in Section B, Grave No. 5863 on 11-22-1862. (Listed in records as 'McCullough, L.') His grave is about 75 yards from that of his father, who died a month earlier of the same causes in the same hospital.

Samuel enlisted as a volunteer Union soldier at Huntsville, AL on 7-31-1862, and was mustered in 8-12-1862, and assigned to Captain Smith's Company K, 1st Reg. AL Volunteers (this organization subsequently became Company K, 1st Reg. AL Cavalry (new)). He died of measles in Hospital No. 14, in Nashville TN on 10-23-1862.

According to Samuel's file 'Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama,' when he enlisted he was 5 feet 113/4 inches tall, of light complexion, with blue eyes and auburn hair.

He was buried in Nashville National Cemetery in Section B, Grave No. 6986 on 10-24-1862. Listed as 'McCullock Sam'l').

Thomas D. McCulloch enlisted as a volunteer Union soldier at Huntsville, AL 7-31-1862, was mustered in 8-12-1862 and assigned to Captain D.D. Smith's Company K, 1st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers (which became the 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry). Thomas D. was in one of Capt. Smith's two Companies raised in northern AL and assigned to Col. Streight's Raid. He was wounded and captured at Day's Gap, Alabama 4-30-1863. Colonel Streight's raid across north Alabama lasted between April 7 till May 3, when he and all c. 1500 of his troops were captured by General Nathan Bedford Forrest near the AL-GA border, before they reached their objective of Rome, GA.

Thomas D. was confined in a Confederate Military Prison in Richmond VA on 12-18-1863. He was admitted to Ward C, Howard Grove Hospital in Richmond, VA on 1-9-1864 with smallpox and returned to duty 1-28-1864. He was admitted to Hospital 21 at Richmond VA on 2-21-1864, where he died on 2-26-1864 of 'diarrhea and debility'

According to Thomas' file 'Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama,' when he enlisted he was 6 feet and 7/8 inch tall, of dark complexion, with black eyes and auburn hair. His Casualty Sheet states that he was 'Wounded by Enemy near Days Gap Ala. and taken Prisoner. Believed by Citizens to have died sometime in 1863.'
