'.... Served in CSA during Civil War. Enlisted on July 24, 1861, mustered in as a private in J.W. [Captain James W.] Hinton's Company A, 8th regiment of the North Carolina Infantry. Served on coastal defense on the NC outer banks where he was captured at the surrender of Roanoke Island on Februry 8, 1862. He was released (exchanged) in August 1862 but hospitalized several times between 1862 and December 1864. From then till the end of the war, he was stationed in the Petersburg VA area, where he met Jane Collett who was to became his wife. Member of William F. Born in Pasquotank County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Pasquotank County at age 19, July 24, 1861, for the war. Captured at Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862, and paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21, 1862. Exchanged in August, 1862. Present or accounted for through October, 1864.'
