Elliott, James Carson Sr., Private Company F, 56th North Carolina Infantry “The Cleveland Riflemen” Born in Cleveland County on July 12, 1845. Resided in Cleveland County where he enlisted at age 18, August 12, 1863, for the war. Reported present or accounted for through June 1864. Sent home on sick furlough on August 13, 1864. Returned to duty in September - October 1864. Captured at Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25,1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, March 27, 1865. Released at Point Lookout on June 12, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [Wounded in the left arm above the elbow on an unspecified date.] Born: June 12, 1845 Died: June 17, 1936 in Cleveland Co., NC Buried: Elliott Family Cemetery, Polkville, NC Married: Bridget Gettys Children: 9 Occupation: Teacher, writer and mayor James Elliott was a prolific writer and genealogist after the war and left behind numerous stories about his war years many of which are on file in the NC State Historical Library in Raleigh, NC.
