My G.G.Grandfather William enlisted on Feb 4th 1862 in Goochland, VA. was promoted to 4th Corporal in May/June 1863. Was hospitalized at Chemborazo Hospital #3, 26 Dec 1862 and returned to duty on 1 Dec 1862, in time for Fredricksburg. From 5/1-5/1863 Chancellorsville, William is quoted as 'having furnished the litter bearers to bring him (Stonewall Jackson)from the field'. On 1 July 1863, the opening day of the battle of Gettysburg, in the action at McPherson's Farm house. William was cited for valor and promoted to 1st Sergeant, 'For valor on that day.' On 3 July, he participated in the action known as Pickets Charge. On 14 July 1863, William was captured at the Battle of Falling Waters and sent to Old Capital Prison until August 8th when he was transfered to the POW camp at Point Lookout, MD. He was exchanged on 31 March 1864. He fought with the 22nd until they were disbanded on Dec 22nd 1864 by special order #303. William continued to fight until he was captured once again on the 6th of April 1865 at Amelia Court House, 3 days prior to General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. William was held at Point Lookout once again until the 24th of June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States of America. He was paroled to Bedford County, Va. The last information I have on William was that he was still alive in Nov 1928, and residing in Huntington, W VA. If any one has any information about William, I would be very grateful to hear of it. Also I would appreciate any photos of Company H the 22nd or other details related to this history.
