Born February 26, 1840 in Botertourt County. Note that Craig County was created 21 March 1851 from Botetourt, Giles, Roanoke and Monroe (now in West Virginia) Counties. Listed as William, Day Laborer, in the 1860 census. Enlisted in Company B, 28th Virginia Infantry, March 12, 1862 as a private. He was in the battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Gaines Mill, Frayser's Farm, 2nd Manassas, and Sharpsburg. He served until he was captured in Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. Confined on 06 July 1863 at Point Lookout, MD. He was exchanged at Point Lookout, Maryland in October 15, 1864. The Census of 1870 lists him as a Farm Laborer. Confederate Pension application of 1888 states that he enlisted in Company B, 28th Virginia. "The 3rd day of July 1863 I was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg by a shell or some missle - was struck in the left knee." He also states that he is a resident of Ripley's Mills. Listed in the 1870 census of Craig County as a Farm laborer along with his two unmarried sisters. Listed in the 1910 census as a widowed boarder in the household of John P. Keslar. Listed in the 1920 census as living with his daughter, Etta R Crawford/Mrs. Lee T. Crawford Died September 18, 1928 in Craig County, Virginia. His obituary was published by the Craig County Historical Society in "Clippings from the New Castle Record and other Unidentified Newspapers of the Craig County, Vriginia, area", New Castle: Craig County Historical Society, 1988. p134. The obituary states: "Crawford, John William "Uncle Billy" - died at home in Barbours Creek area September 18, 1928, age 88 years 6 months, 22 days; of hardening of the arteries. He was buried in the Family plot on the farm of H.C. Crawford. He was a CSA veteran, Company B, 28th Virginia Regiment and was the last survivor of the original Company B that went out from Craig under Capt. Nathaniel Claiborne Wilson of Fincastle. Survivors: Son C. C. Crawford, Daughter Mrs. Lee T. Crawford. See Craft, Rufus L."
