Cornelius was born 30 Oct 1838 in Marlboro Co. SC. he is about 23 years old when he enlists on 12 Jan 1862 at Bennettsville, in aforesaid county. Co C. Capt W.P. Emanuel's Co. 12th Battalion SC Vol. Cavalry. Mustered 4 Feb 1862 at Georgetown, SC. His horse is valued at $171.00 and equipment at $13.00. A CMR dated 17 July 1863 gives his rank as 3rd Sergeant. This company on 16 Dec 1862 is consolidated and known as 4th Squadron South Carolina Cavalry [Rutledge's] He has 5 cards in his 12th Battn: archives and 2 cards in his 4th SC Cavalry archives. Assigned first to the Dept of SC, Ga, & Fla. Moved to Virginia in 1864 and saw action in the following battles: Haws Shop, Trevilian Station, Siege of Petersburg, Vaughn Road, Burgesse's Mill, Carolina Campaign, Monroe's Crossing, & Bentonville. SC. He married my distant relative Elizaberh Rebecca "Bettie" Mitchell. He died 19 Aug 1907 and they are buried at Salem Baptist Cem. Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC.
