William was born in Salisbury, Rowan Co. NC 20 Dec 1840. He was 22 when he was conscripted 7 Sept 1862. His CMR's are noted mostly as present. He has several bouts of illness and on 16 Dec 1864 he is assigned as a Guard at the Brigade Hospital. He also served part time as a nurse. 10 March 1865 he is suffering from a leg ulcer and is given a 60 day furlough. He is captured in his sick bed and paroled 18 May 1865 at his home in Salisbury . His unit was engaged in most of the large battles in Va and NC. He is married to Elisabeth Jane Hoffner. Note to researcher: Their is another William Hoffman's CMR's intermingled with our William: However the other William died as POW in 1865 on Hart Island in NY Harbor.
