Edward Kelber (sometimes added: von Degenfeld) was born Julius Eduard Daniel Kelber, known as Eduard, 23 Apr 1828 Riedbach Württemberg, son of the Rev. Johann Immanuel Gottlieb Kelber and Christiane Katharina Hoffmann. Married Christiane Friedericke Ziegler Jul 26 1855 at Lorch Württemberg. Mustered in at New York City March 14, 1864 as a private. Age 36, Credited to the 4th Congressional district. Bounty paid $73. Organized at Hart Island, NY Mar 14, 1864. Promoted to Corporal May 1, 1864. Taken prisoner at Reams Station VA August 25, 1864 where he was also wounded. Was imprisoned at Salisbury NC. Escaped by feigning smallpox after which he was transferred to the edge of the prison camp. Reported self as an escaped prisoner of war at the Provost Marshall's Office in Raleigh NC Apr 12, 1865. Rejoined camp May 17, 1865. Claimed pay as corporal July-August 1864. Pay and rations and 3 months extra pay as prisoner of war. Mustered out Aug 4, 1865 at Hart's Island, NY, sent for wife and daughter and settled in the Rochester PA area where he d 19 Sep 1892. Note: Edward Kelber served in more than one regiment.
