Richard Henderson Moring, the son of Caswell and Emily Moring, was born in 1836 at the Moring home place in Prince Edward County, Va. He was the seventh of nine boys and eighth of ten siblings. At the outbreak of the war, he was earning a living as a farmer in Lunenburg County. He enlisted on May 28, 1861 at Meherrin, in 'K' Company of the 21st Virginia Infantry, as a private. 'K' company was known as the 'Meherrin Greys'. At the time of his enlistment, he was listed as 5'9' tall, black hair, hazel eyes, and a dark complexion. He was POW at Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864. He was sent to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland, and then to Elmira Prison in New York State. He was 'exchanged' on October 11, 1864 and it is unclear whether he rejoined his unit or served as a 'home guard' in Prince Edward County. He was admitted to Farmville Hospital where he stayed from January 3, 1865 until March 16, 1865. His ailment was listed as 'pneumonia and debility.' In the final days of Lee's last stand, he was again POW. This time captured at Amelia on April 6, 1865 only a short distance from the Moring home place in Prince Edward County. Once again, he was sent to Point Lookout and was held until June 15, 1865 after taking the 'Oath of Allegiance.' After the war, he returned to the Moring home place to settle and assumed a life of farming and earning a living as a carpenter. His final years were spent in Danville, with his second wife Annie Eliza Wise Moring, probably residing near or with his daughter Mary H. Moring. He died in 1910 and is buried on the old Moring home place.
