K2NO Black Panther
|
The South Koreans have unveiled their contender for the Norwegian MBT competition - the K2NO Black Panther. The competition is between the K2 and the Leopard 2A7.

At the outset the 2A7 is heavy favourite, but after the Korean K9 Thunder won the competition for new Sp Artillery for the Norwegian army, the K2 might well be in with a decent chance. The K9 has certainly performed well in Norwegian winter terrain so far.

K9 or K2? I'm confused. The Koreans have the K2 and K9? The Koreans know how to engineer vehicles.

K2 Black Panther is the MBT (top photo), K9 Thunder/Vidar (bottom photo) is the SP Artillery. In addition there is the K10 Artillery tender which was also bought together with the K9....

Competition trials underway in Norway. Everyone expects Leopard 2A7 to win, but reports are that the K2 BlackPanther is doing really well in the trials. We'll see what comes out of it.
In other news, Norway prepares to receive some 35,000 NATO troops for the Cold Response 22 manoeuvres in the north, at the same time as the Russians have gutted their land forces on the Kola peninsula and sent them to Belarus. That could be interesting.

I'm not so impressed with the Leopard. The ROK tank though is pretty good kit, more modern design, and designed to operate in terrain more similar to Norway's (excluding the rice patties of course) than the Leopard.

Yeah, reports are that the K2 has performed very well indeed....but this might end up as a political decision of course. Having said that, the K9 SP Artillery that Norway bought a couple of years back have performed well so far, so perhaps it would make sense to go for K2 to take advantage economies of scale in maintenance etc.
We will see what the outcome is. To be honest, MBT is not really the key need in the Norwegian army, given that the country is 96% mountains. Personally Iwould perhaps have gone for attack helicopters if I had to choose, but the ideal would be to get both systems of course.
The next few weeks will be interesting as NATO is about to stick some 40,000 troops on the Russian border in the north in Cold Response 22.
