I remember reading that both Anglo-Saxon fyrd and Merovingian (or possibly early Carolingian?) military organization were actually more similar to Byzantine thematic system than to later feudal system of vassalage. Does anyone know books or even just historiographical works / master theses which adress this question (including how it developed and what were its political implications)?

Aldarion, welcome to MHO. You bring a voice from a troubled region.

Your interests are far outside my knowledge zone. So I’m not sure if you believe that the values of the western feudal system are outgrowths of Byzantine practices, or may be simply cognate.

I hope you get better response from others than you have from me. I look forward to some responses you might receive.

Cheers. And stay safe.
