Hi Larry,
A couple of the officers in this article, are left wanting by history, Gen Seigel was a political appointed german officer, known for his retreats! & Gen Fremont ran for President, & didn't fare well, partly because of his non successful Civil War record!? And General Lyon was certainly a failure in regards to this battle, at least as portrayed!? I bet the CSA forces wished all Union officers were like them!??
But again this is what I have read about these guys, & I can't substantiate it!? for sure??
What say you? Anyone??
Regards, MD

Hi Dave,
How delightful to see that you’ve joined the party !
I began to think that Larry and I were the last men standing, conducting a conversation between the two of us.
Lyon strikes me as a frightening man ; a warrior to his toenails and a furious foe.
We’re I a Southerner in 1861, I imagine I’d have heaved a sigh of relief to learn that he’d met his death on the battlefield.
Fremont and Siegel were dream opponents for the South : Lyon a nightmare to go up against.
This is my impression; I must admit to scant knowledge about this episode of the war.
Regards, Phil

Dave,
Let’s find out more about this guy Lyon.
He sounds like an Old Testament fanatic.
Every now and then wars throw up these zealots, who have a disproportionate effect on outcomes.
I wonder if Lyon was the sort of warrior who would have carried out a real “ total war” against secession, not just against the property of southerners, in the mode of Sherman, but against the citizens themselves, visiting death in the manner of an avenging angel .
Regards, Phil
