Larry,

Interesting to see how those Wisconsin regiments at Murfreesboro reported their casualties compared with their rebel counterparts at Fredericksburg barely a couple of weeks earlier. Note the preponderant numbers posted as missing in the Union return, while the men of the 15th NC at Fredericksburg returned not one man as missing in action, despite significant numbers of killed and wounded. Although the yankees prevailed at Stones River, the outset of the battle was very traumatic for them and entailed a terrific loss in killed and prisoners, very reminiscent of their experience on the first day of Shiloh.

Larry,

That landscape around Stones River looks like a very unpleasant place to fight a battle : not that any battlefield could be innately pleasant.....what I mean to say is that there is a lot of limestone outcropping and ravine shaped terrain, which must be a horrible arena when it comes to the effects of shells exploding and bullets ricocheting off those unforgiving surfaces. Stone fragments flying all over the place must have made a deadly accompaniment to the projectiles. The fact that it was cold and damp and in the dismal, dark days of winter must have it worse, especially with the embargo against lighting fires that Bragg insisted upon.

Regards, Phil
