Creation of Fort Pillow - Tennessee
|
Does anyone have any information on the creation of Fort Pillow, TN ? Whenever I look up any information on it, all you ever get is who it was named after and that it was created in 1861. Even the Parks pamphlet does not give any details. Information usually jumps to the Battle of Plum Run Bend, fought near the fort in 1862 and then they jump to the massacre in 1864.
What I would like to know is when it was completes and waht was the forts armament?
Any details will be helpful.
Sincerely,
G. Collins Canada

MD,
I get mixed or confused signals on the Fort Pillow engagement, as you do. It depends on what you read, and who wrote it. Yes, there were Black soldiers killed there, but in what manner? Why were there so many surviving Black soldiers if a massacre occurred?
Can anyone recommend a well-researched, balanced or objective account of Fort Pillow?
Did the US Congress hold any hearings on what happened @ Fort Pillow? Were charges brought up?
Best Regards,
Greg

Greg,
It might help credibility if one of the USCT claimed to have been "murdered" in the "massacre" hadn't been hanged for desertion by the Army.
There isn't really one single definitive account out there. I think you have to read a bunch of them and use common sense. The one point I think is overlooked is the part played by the 13th West Tenn Cav Union. Forrest recruited basically a whole brigade on this raid because of the way precieved Rebels were being treated. A lot of the Patriot and Loyalist from the rev all over again.
