Goodness, Larry : this North Carolina press transcends in its discernment and candour.
What was it about that state that imparted such high standards ?
It was hardly like its fire eating southern sister. : not fire eating ; just tar heel : am I right ?
The impression I get is of a kind of enlightenment that differentiated it.
To the actual article itself ; the first impact is the sheer severity of the casualties. The 7th NC of Lane’s Brigade, carrying 317 into action, returns a loss of 220 killed, wounded and missing.
More revealing still is the analysis of the commentary attached .
The prospect of continued defensive warfare, conducted at such cost, is reckoned to be intolerable. An initiative must be taken. An offensive is required. More significantly, this needs to be pressed in the West. A portent of Chickamauga, or a justification for Lee’s foray into Pennsylvania ?
Clearly, this NC agency looks beyond the confines of its state interests, and sees a picture of greater strategic scope.
Mightily impressed by these NC missives, I’m inspired to investigate further.
Regards, Phil
