Well, sending all your cavalry away on a wild goose chase depriving yourself of any chances of any effective reconnaissance is never a good idea.

That newspaper article alludes to the “ Heavy losses of General Sedgwick .” Hooker blamed Sedgwick’s performance for the defeat, if I’ve been properly informed.
Sedgwick’s Corps suffered the heaviest casualties of all the Union corps in the campaign , and this suggests that Hooker was not being gracious in his treatment of his subordinate commanders. Regards, Phil

The coming days will certainly be interesting to see how the press treats Hooker and his performance at Chancellorsville. I have never studied Chancellorsville in depth so this will be very enlightening for me.

Phil,
Hooker was just trying to pass the blame. Originally, Sedgewick was only supposed to "demonstrate" in front of Fredricksburg to pin Lee. Sedgewick was supposed to be the anvil and Hooker the hammer. Once Hooker got himself into a mess, he wanted to reverse the hammer/anvil, and ordered Sedgewick to attack and then push into Lee´s rear. Early, although he could not hold Mayre´s Heights, was able to conduct an orderly retreat south. This enabled him to attack Sedgewick on his march to the Wilderness.
