What a terrible day that third of May turned out to be.
One of the war’s bloodiest, with casualties that rivalled those of Shiloh’s first day, or Gettysburg’s second.

Often cited as Lee at his peak brilliance of manoeuvre, it was a horrific slug fest with great slaughter.

The greater the general, Winston Churchill was to opine sixty odd years later when he was lamenting the record of WW1, the more he relies on manoeuvre and the less on slaughter. At Chancellorsville, Lee was ready to take on both.

Regards, Phil
