An impressive, accurate and fair assessment.

Devoid of hype and propaganda, it suggests to me that there were some discerning and level headed journalists in North Carolina, with readers to match.

There is significant acknowledgment of Hooker’s effective and skilful manoeuvre.

When I think of the enormous loss of life suffered by North Carolina in the war, it strikes me as tragic that such a sacrifice went hand in hand with candour and reporting of such high standards.

A tribute to robust democratic principles: controversial and counterintuitive as that must sound to the modern ear with its abomination of a society that fought to uphold its “ Peculiar Institution “.
