15th Amendment adopted
|
Following its ratification by the requisite three-fourths of the states, the 15th Amendment, granting African American men the right to vote, is formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution. Passed by Congress the year before, the amendment reads, “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” One day after it was adopted, Thomas Peterson-Mundy of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, became the first African American to vote under the authority of the 15th Amendment.
In 1867, the Republican-dominated Congress passed the First Reconstruction Act, over President Andrew Johnson’s veto, dividing the South into five military districts and outlining how new governments based on universal manhood suffrage were to be established. With the adoption of the 15th Amendment in 1870, a politically mobilized African American community joined with white allies in the Southern states to elect the Republican Party to power, which brought about radical changes across the South. By late 1870, all the former Confederate states had been readmitted to the Union, and most were controlled by the Republican Party, thanks to the support of African American voters.
In the same year, Hiram Rhodes Revels, a Republican from Natchez, Mississippi, became the first African American ever to sit in Congress. Although African American Republicans never obtained political office in proportion to their overwhelming electoral majority, Revels and a dozen other African American men served in Congress during Reconstruction, more than 600 served in state legislatures, and many more held local offices. However, in the late 1870s, the Southern Republican Party vanished with the end of Reconstruction, and Southern state governments effectively nullified the 14th and 15th Amendments, stripping Southern African Americans of the right to vote. It would be nearly a century before the nation would again attempt to establish equal rights for African Americans in the South. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/15th-amendment-adopted?cmpid=email-hist-tdih-2023-0330-03302023&om_rid=21539c69abde70e4e3fda02b9d14d1819c3badeaf5a2bcab48a023eefe0cd3d2

Rights were denied for 20 years until the Democrats passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Another post about something other than the topic of the thread..which is Civil War Battles ( eastern Theater).
And those civil rights laws were not passed by the Democrats alone. A higher percentage of Republican`s in congress voted for them because the Democrats did not have the votes to pass it! "...of the four Civil Rights acts passed between 1957 and 1968, Republicans IN BOTH CHAMBERS OF CONGRESS voted in favor at a higher rate than Democrats in all but one case."
But, again, why post this here on this thread.
Respects, Morris

Respects, Morris The 13th 14th and 15 Amendments were passed after the Civil War, and exist because the North won. So, yes, a discussion of the 15th Amendment does belong here .
Liberal Republicans joined Liberal Democrats joined together to pass those Acts...we call that bi-partisanship.
And recall that Conservative Democrats like Strom Thurmond abandoned the Democrats, like all Southern Democrats, and joined the Republican Party.

" We call that bi-partisanship"...yes it is...and why then do you get off saying that "democrats" passed those laws when they would not have passed unless a higher percentage of the Republicans had not voted FOR them than did Democrats. ? The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were passed after the civil war...but they were not civil war battlefields of the Eastern theater...were they?

Respects, Morris Well, first of all, I said Liberal Republicans and Liberal Democrats, and not democrats.
Second of all, Democrats from the Olde Confederacy were not going to pass any legislation promoting the Civil Rights of Afro-Americans. Why do you think Thurmond and Southern Democrats became republicans in the 1968 Presidential election?
The Civil War was decided in the East when Lee surrendered to Grant. It may have been won in the West, but it was decided in the East.

NY, read your own initial post....concerning the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments you said "liberal Republicans and liberal Democrats passed them. Fine...accurate.
In your last sentence that clearly concerns the civil rights acts, you said that "democrats passed" them....no mention of them being bi-partisan acts...let alone that a higher percentage of the Republicans voted for them than did the Democrats. Lets get the history straight if we are going to post on any thread let alone the proper place for the post.

Morris, FYI, a Liberal Democrat is still a Democrat. They were never chased out of the Party , like the Republicans chased out Liberal Republicans.
The History is pretty straight.

NY, unlike you...I will not engage in tit for tat political attacks against one party or the other. As so many of your ilk...that is what you seem to want to do...and utilize topic threads that are not related or appropriate, in the effort to force it on everyone by posting them to civil war battle topic threads, and posting them to Yoder`s Pub.
This topic should have been posted to the General History topic heading. While Dave utilizes certain " this date in history" promps...it is also about history in general...non-specific dates.
Years ago, we had a Civil War Politics topic heading that would have been ideal for this topic. But it was taken away. General History is still available though, and that is where this belongs...not Civil War BATTLES ( Eastern Theater)

Well, your study of the Civil War must have stopped when Lee surrendered to Grant. Study Reconstruction.

Group,
Mr. Crumley and I are often far apart in many ways, but now I say HEAR, HEAR! Mr. Crumley!
Yes the post is not military as far a topic or content. And yes, freedom of speech etc. But continued not military posts and placing in not related thread sections is inconsiderate at the least and bordering on self-serving and insolent, No? I have already complained of political posts in another thread. Problem with some children is they are so self-enamored they continue rude attention wanting behavior even when politely ask to be good.
There are dozens of military topics out there. I truly appreciate new military topics.
But Blah, Blah, Blah political blather with people talking past each other not listening to each other and having no constructive purpose but self-gratification is boring and tasteless.

Quite the opposite. There would be no 15th Amendment if it were not for the Civil War.
Problem is, some juveniles are narrow minded and they continue with adolescent behavior when those with more enlightenment try to open their eyes to the facts.
