A bit curious here : the article headline refers to the battle at Sharpsburg(h) , but makes no allusion to it in the following text.
Is there a sequel ?

I hope you dont mind suggestion or request? (since you are very good at finding these contemporary news articles)
It may be very interesting to find one particular clip in the Richmond Examiner, if you can?
In the Kean diary for Feb 26 1864;
"The assignment of Bragg as commanding general makes quite a buzz.
The (Richmond) Examiner had yesterday, the 25th, one of the keenest pieces of irony on the subject that I ever read"
this article may offer some insight of the contemporary reaction to the appointment.
we may expect some pretty sharp critic of Davis or Bragg.
Relieved of command in Tennessee Davis made Bragg his military adviser and General - in - Chief of the confederate armies.

Yeah! thanks great job, & spot on.
Well, article far more positive than I thought it would be and showed strong support for Bragg and Davis' decision.
Kean's "irony" i now take to mean that he personally disapproved & therefore expressed his criticism as saying such a positive statement was ironic in relation to kean's own view, IMO.
In Kean's position as no 3 in the war department he saw the day to day workings up close. He often expressed sharp critic vs high commanders like Bragg and at times even Lee. He was one of many southerners with clear anti-west pointism. It would be fair IMO to call Kean a realist who while strongly pro confederate and slavery would often comment on the errors and false moral bluster in the face of demonstrated defeats.
As a side note - it was kean who was personally responsible for saving and preserving the mass of confederate army records and correspondence in the wake of the abandonment of Richmond and over saw the evacuation of those records. vital information for our understanding of the war.
