That Vermont newspaper strikes me as candid and unflinching, unwilling to subscribe to platitudes or propaganda.
The prospect of defeat is openly countenanced, and the harrowing description of the fate of the wounded is a stark reminder of what these awful battles entailed, especially when an army retreats from burning woods.
To what might we attribute this determination to drive home the truth, however unpalatable ?
Was Vermont the quintessential New England Abolitionist state, with a degree of commitment that would brook no compromise, especially when it came to reporting the realities of the war ?
