In the footsteps of Peiper
|
I am planning a 15 day tour of the Ardennes and the Normandy Invasion Beaches for 2023 with my good friend, the MetsFan. We are in the process of getting the GPS locations of sites adn just following them.
Have any members done an actual tour of the advance of Peiper, in his actual route, from Lanzerath to his furthest advance marker?
We have Mueller and Cavanaugh's tour books.
Thanks

Of course!!
I am going with another friend for 15 days taking in the Battle of the Bulge and some Normandy Invasion sites.
Regarding the Bulge, we both read Snow and Steel, A Time For Trumpets, and Those Damn Engineers, and are using 2 tour books, one by Robert Mueller and one by William Cavanaugh. Mueller's book has GPS coordinates. So we are renting a car, getting a Garmin GPS device and planning on visiting sites. Though we have planned a few museums to visit, this is not a museum tour. We like to walk the ground where the battles concurred. Plus I like to look at and study the terrain.
Reading the 2 books, we have focused on a few things we would like to see. We'd like to do the actual tour that Peiper took when he advanced. We want to visit the sites where the 14th Cavalry was stretched out beyond their capabilities. We want to see where Goldstein halted an entire column of Panzers bu asking " Who goes there". Bridges are a must. We plan on visiting sites where the massacre of US soldiers occurred and thank them for defending our Freedoms.
We will visit Bastogne, but we are concentrating on how Bastogne was defended to allow the 101st to arrive there.
We have read Sand and Steel. The Normandy Tour will concentrate on the WNs along Omaha Beach, plus we will visit the Canadian and British beaches. Another tour book by Mueller gives us the GPS coordinates. This is our 2nd trip to Normandy together.
We have already made arrangements to stay in Air B&Bs.
Is there anything specific you would like to know?
For 2023, I am planning a trip with about 8 fellow enthusiasts to spend a month in Europe visiting WW I, WW 2, Napoleonic war and sites In Poland.
I've sone similar trips to American Civil War sites and Revolutionary War sites

Another good read and has plenty of maps especially Pipers Ardennes trek is 'The Devils Adjutant' by Michael Reynolds. Anything by Rudolf Lehmann is considered a reasonably accurate account of the Leibstandarte history and taking into consideration the unit diaries were all (?) destroyed at the end of the war.

I am alotting 2 full days to follow the route of Peiper, starting basically in Germany where he advanced towards Lanzerath. We have some sites we want to look at, Malady, the site where Goldstein stopped Peiper's column by saying "Halt. Who goes there", and the anti-tank gun position at Trois Points.
We have 2 museums scheduled, though we don't know how much time we will spend there...one at Malmedy and one a La Gleize.

Both books by Timo Worst on Gustav Knittel are excellent and make a good counterpoint to the better-known activities of Peiper. Another good source are his posts at Axis History Forum, where his username is "Harro".

Yes it is a good one. A good friend of mine was able to interview Colonel Pergrin about 25 years ago. Quite a guy.
