The Battle of Stalingrad Every Week with Maps

Bryan,
Thanks for this.
An excellent accompaniment to a new book on the battle that I’m currently reading:
THE LIGHTHOUSE OF STALINGRAD, The Hidden Truth at the Centre of WWII’s Greatest Battle, by Iain MacGregor.

The Battle of Stalingrad Every Week with Maps

According to the book I’ve cited above, two German divisions of the Sixth Army, the 71st and the 295th, undertook a prolonged attack against the Soviet forces deployed in Stalingrad between 14 and 22 September 1942. The combat was intense and portended the horrible character of the battle to come. I was surprised to read that, in that period, those two German divisions reported casualties of just under two thousand, of whom 370 were killed, 1,555 wounded and 29 missing. This seems a rather modest figure, bearing in mind the terrible reputation of the fighting. More pertinently, the Soviet 13th Guards division that opposed them counted 1,896 in killed and missing alone in that period. A lopsided affair that leaves me wondering how the Soviets were able to win.
Regards, Phil
