Fascinating indeed. There is so much in this video; Panzer 38(t)'s, Panzer IV short-barrel, Russian prisoners, the church spires, the interaction of German troops and Belarus/Russian civilians, the German graves, etc.

Fascinating video
|
Effective and haunting : the evocation of enormous space, the primitive peasant culture, the rather diminutive tanks and the distant explosions and solitary aircraft. The German soldiers look tired and hot, but seem to be in good spirits and making the best of whatever comforts they can secure. Most troubling are the vignettes of those Russian prisoners : most of them destined to perish in German captivity. The German cemetery intrigues me : an old fashioned Teutonic cross placed atop, not a swastika. Some young women in white dresses are mingling with the German soldiers : are they German medical personnel , or civilians happy to engage in whatever activities circumstances dictate ?

Hubris and Nemesis.
Arrogant people enjoying their moments of triumph : they're going to get their comeuppance : that's the impact it makes on me, and then a closer look at the faces of those youngsters in field grey makes me aware that they, too, have humanity and many of them strive for decency in a fast enveloping nightmare. It's a disturbing feeling.
