In my readings I've come up with more then one question, but for now
this one I could use an answer to.
During the run up to "his" invasion of the PI, he wanted the Navy to
take Peleliu to protect his right flank, why I don't understand as there would be no way for the Japanese to mount any
offensive action from there.
But why did he not ask for his 7th fleet to destroy the Japanese fleet then at anchorage in the
Mayla peninsula or ask the JCS to ad that to the combat narrative before the invasion.
It would have precluded the Battle of Leyte gulf.

Sanddoc,
Air attacks on the invasion fleet. Halsey did opine that it was not needed and should be canceled after attacking in the weeks before the invasion because the airfields had no offensive capability.

I evidently did not make myself clear.
I know that Halsey had expressed that Peleliu was not needed. Nimitz wanted to attack anyway...
Nimitz was the Omar Bradly of the Pacific.
What I am asking is why MacArthur did not attack the Japanese fleet in Malaya
That was his Left Flank
Peleliu was 700 miles from the Philippians it was surrounded by the US Navy
hardly a threat to MacArthur.

Sandoc,
Nimitz was a hell of a lot more than the Pacific's Omar Bradly. For one Nimitz and MacArthur were equals in command of different sectors of the Pacific.
Its a lot more complicated than Nimitz wanted to go ahead anyway. First it wasn't just the island of Peleliu by the entire Paulas(ssp?) chain that was being invaded with a force of over 3 Divisions and part of that invasion force had already set sail. Second MacArthur was at sea and wasn't available to consult and Southerland wouldn't agree to cancel without MacArthur's OK.
Any US/Allied Fleet attempting to engage a Japanese Fleet in Malayan waters also is going to have to deal with land based Japanese air from the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Indochina, Malaya and a few other smaller islands in the area before making contact with any Japanese surface ship. Why run that gauntlet?
No Peleliu wasn't surrounded by the US Navy. I think maybe you are thinking of Rabaul.
Edit The Zero and Betty could make the round trip from Peleliu.
