Larry,

This is a very interesting article : would you help me with a little context, please ?

What was the date of the article ?

Anyone reading it would suspect that the Sharpshooters were slaughtered in the manner of the 1st Minnesota. The writer describes the thing in terms of just a few emerging alive, and of half his unit being killed or wounded.

I referred immediately to the casualty figures, and saw that Berdan’s command suffered relatively modest loss : painful for those engaged , but, in the currency of that awful battle, hardly severe.

It’s interesting to note the self effacing candour of the author, who pleads guilty to misreading Berdan’s motives and character, and actually expresses a wish to atone.

The action of those sharpshooters at Gettysburg must be worthy of discussion .

Another contingent claiming to have saved the Union !

Regards, Phil

Hi Phil. This article appeared in the National Tribune December 16, 1886. By this many years after the battle many veterans were sure their regiment was at the pivotal point of the battle and they alone saved the day.

Larry.

Hi Larry,

You're right.

A generation later, old soldiers become more indulgent in hyperbole than ever.

I suppose that sharpshooters provide invaluable work in harassing enemy formations, and also in reporting on terrain and deployment.

A lot of controversy about Gettysburg is focused on the time that elapsed before Longstreet got his big attack together on Day Two, and it wouldn’t surprise me if significant credit is given to Berdan’s role in disrupting preparations here.

What does surprise me is the claim the author makes about the sacrifice of his unit, with the attendant exaggeration of the casualties suffered.

Regards, Phil

I've done a Ranger walk from the Peach Orchard to their monument off West Confederate Avenue.
