Churchill quote on Gettysburg
Posted on: 9/4/2020 11:46:16 AM

On another thread Phil Andrade and I were discussing a quote about Gettysburg attributed to Sir Winston Churchill, but the source was not readily located. Here it is: the 1954 book, "Sir Winston Churchill: A Self-Portrait", page 269. The quote came from a 1943 speech Churchill gave before the American Congress.

"I was driving the other day not far from the field of Gettysburg, which I know well, like most of your battlefields. It was the decisive battle of the American Civil War. No one after Gettysburg doubted which way the dread balance of war would incline, yet far more blood was shed after the Union victory at Gettysburg than in all the fighting which went before." Winston Churchill

Best Regards,

Greg

A thousand thanks, Greg !

It was really bothering me : the absolute conviction that I had read that somewhere, with subsequent failure to find the source, making me doubt my mental faculties.

You’ve rescued me 😊,

Regards, Phil
