Company H
George W. Cozart
- Private
George W. Cozart/Cozort was William N.'s son; both appear on the 1850 Spadra, ARK (Johnson Co.) census. Both enlisted on the same day in 1861 at Whitesboro, TX. George W. was discharged 7/6/1862 for being too young; disch. was authorized by Gen. Albert Pike, who commanded all CSA troops operating in the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) at that time. George W. was at Ft. Washita, I.T., in 1861. NOTE: A mysterious D.W.Cozort/Cozart appears in Co. D of the Bourland's Regiment, aka the Border Regiment, which was not organized until 1863. That regiment also patrolled and policed the Indian Territory and worked with Texas Rangers and other troops guarding and protecting Texas and Oklahoma settlers and settlements in North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma and NW Louisiana. I cannot trace a 'D.W. Cozort/Cozart' in any other files. I suspect D. W. is the reenlisted G(eorge) W. At any rate, D. W. was court-martialed for an unknown offense in August, 1864. I do not know the outcome, although skimpy records indicate a verdict of guilty. George had a twin brother James; both were born in Arkansas, so the family was there as early as 1844. I don't know what happened to James.

William N. Cozart
- Private
This change is to correct info in a previous entry. William N. Cozart/Cozort came to Whitesboro, TX from Arkansas; he was born in North Carolina. He and his family, including son George W., appear in the 1850 Spadra, ARK census; William was 29 then. I do not know what attracted them to Whitesboro, but they are relatives of Henderson Cozart, one of the Texas Heroes who were murdered at the Goliad Massacre in 1836. As a result, Henderson's family were awarded land in Texas. William N. enlisted in 1861 and was discharged 5/1862 for disability. He was at Ft. Washita in the Indian Territory for a while. The 22nd Texas Cavalry was also known as the 1st (Texas) Indian Regiment and as Taylor's Regiment. William's son George W. was also in the same outfit.
