James was born 19 June 1843 in Anson County NC. His family moved to Mississippi and on to Texas where he is listed as 17 y/o on 1860 census. He enlists in Capt. Joseph P Wier's Company of Mounted Vols. on 11 Sept. 1961 at Camp Herbert near Hempstead. His horse is valued at $145 and equipment at $20. It is 260 miles to rendezvous. 23 Dec 1861 finds him in the hospital at Houston Tx with Dx of Typhoid Fever. He recovers and rejoins his Regiment which is nicknamed "The Swamp Fox" for its ability to navigate the swamps and appear out of nowhere and attack. Battles: White River Expedition, Skirmish at Whitney's Lane on 19 May 1862, Cotton Plant on7 July 1862, L'Anguille Ferry, and the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. He has 5 cards in his archival file. He died 30 Jan 1877 and is buried in Covington Cem, Covington, Hill Co. Texas. We are related by marriage.

Enlisted by Capt. Wier for 3 years. His brother James is in this company. He has 2 cards in his archival file. He was assigned to the Trans-Mississippi Dept. He survived the war and died and is buried in Covington, Hill County Texas. He married Idella Rushing in 1875, my distant cousin.

Born January 9, 1844 in Missouri, Abalsom moved with his parents Obediah and Delila Taylor Epps to Collin County, Texas. He enlisted in Well's Battalion at Ft. McColloch July 1, 1862. Part of the time he was on teamster duty. He married Lucy Jane Phillips in 1865 and they raised their family in Collin County. Abalsom was a preacher and farmer after the war. He died June 12, 1914 and is buried at the Mount Olive (Williams) Cemetery in McKinney, Texas. His wife filed for a pension from the state of Texas and received it.
