James B. Sartin - Private
James B. Sartin was born 24 March 1832 in Pike County, Mississippi, son of John and Margaret (Barnes) Sartin. He married Mary Jane Smith in Pike County on 15 June 1856. They were the parents of two children: Susan Ida Jane and Leander Pink Sartin.

James enlisted 26 April 1862 at Holmesville, Mississippi along with his brother, Robert David Sartin and brother-in-law, Jacob Monroe Smith. He died 28 June 1862 and is buried in the Sartinville Cemetery in Walthall County, Mississippi.

Note: Mary Jane Smith was a sister to Jacob Monroe Smith in the 38th and also to Robert David Sartin's wife, Selena Ann.

John Wesley Sartin was born 29 July 1843 in Pike County, Mississippi, the son of Major and Matilda (May) Sartin.
He married Morgana Payne on 10 April 1867 in Pike County and they were the parents of two sons: Lucius Whitman and James Lewis Sartin.

He enlisted in the 38th on April 26, 1862 at Holmsville, Mississippi. He was listed, along with his brother-in-law, Jacob Monroe Smith, as AWOL after Vicksburg fell but was later paroled.

John died on 28 February 1872 and is buried in the Sartinville Cemetery in Walthall County, Mississippi.

Robert David Sartin - Private
Robert David Sartin, Sr. was born 6 Oct 1835 in Pike County, Mississippi, son of John and Margaret (Barnes) Sartin. He married Selena Ann Smith on 15 Feb 1859 in Pike Co. and they were the parents of two sons - Robert David Jr. and John Jacob Sartin.

He enlisted on 26 April 1862 at Holmesville, Mississippi and, according to several 38th Mississippi researchers, died 24 June 1862... but family history states he died in April of 1863.

The location of his grave is unknown at this time. His wife and both sons are buried in the Elliot Cemetery in Walthall, County, Mississippi.

Note: Selena Ann Smith was the sister of Jacob Monroe Smith, also in the 38th.

Jacob Monroe Smith - Private
Jacob Monroe 'Jake' Smith was born 5 April 1836 in Marion County, Mississippi, son of Jacob Smith, Jr. and Susan (Smith) Smith. He married Madeline Matilda Sartin (daughter of Major & Matilda (May) Sartin) on 15 June 1856 in Pike County, Mississippi. They were the parents of George Monroe, John Whitman, William Obed, Mary Jane Josephine, Leander Lee, James Madison, Nora Louise, and Thomas Nalty Smith.

Jake enlisted on 26 April 1862 at Holmesville, Mississippi and was listed as AWOL after the Siege of Vicksburg but according to family history, Jake and his brother-in-law, John Wesley Sartin, were separated from their unit when Vicksburg fell but were both later reunited. Jake was took part in the Tupelo Campaign in July of 1864.

Jacob died 15 January 1910 in Pike County, Mississippi and was buried in the Sartinville Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.
